Shades of Light

Brazilian / Jazz

Shades of Light hit the Monterey Peninsula music scene in 2015 with a fresh take on popular repertoire. The duo, Howe Cochran (electric guitar, vocals) and Ellen Berrahmoun (C flute, alto flute, bass flute) serve up an eclectic musical palette of jazz standards, originals, revitalized pop songs, blues, Western swing, Beatles classics, the most beautiful ballads and sparkling Brasilian tunes – all delivered with nuanced arrangements. Shades of Light members Howe and Ellen each bring decades of musical exploration to the table. Howe is an avid bluesman and a long-time fixture on the Monterey music scene, having played with diverse acts including Illuminati, the Blue Collar Band and Songs Hotbox Harry Taught Us, among many others. His latest venture is Howe Now – a jazz/blues, funk and Americana band. Ellen is an armchair musical traveler with forays into jazz, classical, popular and world music, and a special affinity for Brasilian styles. On the East Coast, she performed with Huellas, Zamba, Timo’s Spanish Show and the Clauduarte Sa Band as well as other groups. In Monterey, Ellen currently plays with the acoustic-rock band, the Thyme Bombs. Since forming Shades of Light, Ellen and Howe have been charting new territory with their free-flowing and freshly interpreted versions of classic tunes from “bebop, bossa, blues, ballads and beyond.”
